About the Image
Created at sunset using intentional camera movement and a slower shutter speed, this photograph was made by moving the camera horizontally during the exposure to soften the horizon and stretch the light from right to left. I wanted the photograph to feel less like a literal seascape and more like a brushstroke — somewhere between photography and watercolour. The gentle transition of colour between sea and sky, together with the softened movement, captured the particular stillness I often feel at the end of the day.

Scientific Perspective
Soft gradients, reduced detail and horizontal visual movement create a low-complexity composition that allows the eye to travel through the image without encountering abrupt changes. Gradual colour transitions are generally easier for the visual system to process than highly fragmented scenes, while the warmer tones of sunset are commonly associated with comfort and warmth and the cooler blue tones with calm and spaciousness. The combination creates a visual balance between warmth and tranquillity.

Sunset represents transition — the release of one part of the day before another begins.
