About the Image

Bolina is a small, intimate beach in Cascais, Portugal, often quieter than the surrounding coastline. On this July day, a dense layer of fog settled over the shore, blending sea, sky and land into a gentle tonal gradient. What stayed with me was the softness of the moment: familiar shapes became less defined, the horizon almost disappeared, and the landscape seemed to dissolve into itself. For me, fog creates a particular kind of peace — a sense of mystery without urgency.

Scientific Perspective

Fog reduces contrast, softens edges and limits distant visual detail, creating a lower-complexity field for the eye to process. In a largely monochromatic image, the absence of strong colour contrast can further shift attention toward tone, texture and spatial depth. These softer visual cues may encourage slower scanning and a more contemplative viewing experience.
