About the Image
Photographed on a cold, windy March day in Estoril, this image caught my attention because of the delicate patterns forming across an otherwise calm ocean. The wind created countless small ripples on the surface, turning the water into an almost continuous texture of light, shadow and movement. Coming from Rio, March in Portugal still felt distinctly cold to me, yet there was something beautiful and absorbing about simply watching the sea respond to the wind.

Scientific Perspective
Repeating natural patterns can hold our attention without demanding a single fixed focal point, allowing the eye to move rhythmically across an image. In black and white, colour is removed as a competing stimulus, bringing greater attention to texture, contrast, repetition and light. The subtle irregularity of the ripples creates visual structure without perfect repetition — a quality commonly found throughout natural environments.

Water carries an energy of flow, renewal and adaptability, while wind introduces movement and change.
